The American Journal of Surgery, 1948Abstract A series of seventeen wounds involving the common carotid artery is reported from experiences in certain forward army hospitals during World War II. The artery was ligated in twelve patients and eight of these survived, with cerebral signs (transient hemiplegia) in only two cases.
