Analysis of atherosclerotic plaque distribution in the carotid artery

open access: yesClinical Cardiology, Volume 45, Issue 12, Page 1272-1276, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Background The present study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that the outer wall at the carotid bifurcation is the most common area of atherosclerotic plaque deposition due to the low shear stress. Hypothesis We hypothesized that the most common site of arteriosclerosis in carotid arteries is different in the early and late stages ...

Segmentation of common and internal carotid arteries from 3D ultrasound images using adaptive triple U-Net [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Objective: Vessel-wall-volume (VWV) and localized vessel-wall-thickness (VWT) measured from 3D ultrasound (US) carotid images are sensitive to anti-atherosclerotic effects of medical/dietary treatments. VWV and VWT measurements require the lumen-intima (LIB) and media-adventitia boundaries (MAB) at the common and internal carotid arteries (CCA and ICA).

Traumatic Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysm with a Concomitant Carotid Cavernous Fistula

open access: yesLife and Science, 2022
Post-traumatic sphenoid sinus pseudoaneurysm arising from the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is rare, and even rarer occurrence is an associated carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF).

The brain‐before‐heart strategy for coronary artery bypass grafting in the severely atherosclerotic aorta: A single‐institution experience

open access: yesClinical Cardiology, Volume 45, Issue 12, Page 1264-1271, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Background Severe atherosclerosis of the ascending aorta (SAA) in patients undergoing surgical revascularization by coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is becoming an increasing problem as more elderly patients are diagnosed with coronary artery disease.

3-D Registration on Carotid Artery imaging data: MRI for different timesteps [PDF]

open access: yes2016 38th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2016
A common problem which is faced by the researchers when dealing with arterial carotid imaging data is the registration of the geometrical structures between different imaging modalities or different timesteps. The use of the "Patient Position" DICOM field is not adequate to achieve accurate results due to the fact that the carotid artery is a ...

Use of lipid‐lowering therapies in patients with chronic kidney disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease: 2‐year results from Getting to an imprOved Understanding of Low‐Density lipoprotein cholesterol and dyslipidemia management (GOULD)

open access: yesClinical Cardiology, Volume 45, Issue 12, Page 1303-1310, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Background Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a known risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Per the 2018 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology cholesterol guidelines, high‐risk ASCVD patients with CKD and low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) levels ≥ $\ge $ 70 mg/dL should take a high‐intensity ...

Orexinergic neurons in the hypothalami of an Asiatic lion, an African lion, and a Southeast African cheetah

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 531, Issue 3, Page 366-389, February 2023., 2023
Photomicrograph of orexinergic neurons forming the main orexinergic neuronal cluster in the hypothalamus of a Southeast African cheetah. While showing the standard features of the orexinergic system, the Southeast African cheetah, along with an Asiatic and an African lion, also exhibits specializations in the organization of this system.

A subset of OPCs do not express Olig2 during development which can be increased in the adult by brain injuries and complex motor learning

open access: yesGlia, Volume 71, Issue 2, Page 415-430, February 2023., 2023
Main Points A subset of OPCs do not express Olig2, of which population peaks in the juvenile brain while wanes with age. Plastic changes of the brain by acute injuries or complex motor learning stop the expression of Olig2 in OPCs. Abstract Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) are uniformly distributed in the mammalian brain; however, their function ...

Deep Learning-Based Carotid Artery Vessel Wall Segmentation in Black-Blood MRI Using Anatomical Priors [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Carotid artery vessel wall thickness measurement is an essential step in the monitoring of patients with atherosclerosis. This requires accurate segmentation of the vessel wall, i.e., the region between an artery's lumen and outer wall, in black-blood magnetic resonance (MR) images.
