Noninvasive Studies of the Carotid Bifurcation
Southern Medical Journal, 1982The accuracy of the noninvasive carotid system studies done in our laboratory during an 18-month period were reviewed. The usefulness of these procedures was found to be limited when used as a "blind" screen for extracranial vascular disease. The overall correlation with angiography was good, with few false-negatives and an accuracy rate of 86%.

Ultramicroscopic Ulcerations and Thrombi of the Carotid Bifurcation
Archives of Surgery, 1977It is widely accepted that transient cerebral ischemia and permanent stroke frequently are caused by platelet and thrombotic cerebral emboli that originate from lesions at the carotid bifurcation. Microembolization from ulcerated atheroma during carotid dissection also offers a logical explanation for the incidence of intraoperative neurologic deficits

Magnetic resonance angiography of the carotid bifurcation
Topics in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 1991MRA methods may be categorized into TOF or PC techniques. TOF techniques utilize flow related enhancement to provide high signal intensity blood. Two common TOF methods to visualize the bifurcations are sequential 2D or 3D imaging. In 2D imaging, the carotid bifurcation is visualized by obtaining a series of thin 2D axial gradient echo images.

Doppler Ultrasound Scanning of the Carotid Bifurcation
Archives of Neurology, 1977The results of Doppler scanning of 146 carotid bifurcations in 86 patients were correlated with carotid arteriography. The correlations for normal carotid arteries ranged from 63% to 98%; the correlation for occlusions of carotid arteries was 100%. The Doppler scan correlated in 70% to 85% of stenoses of the internal or external carotid arteries near ...

Variability in Arteriographic Assessment of the Carotid Bifurcation
Angiology, 1987We evaluated interobserver and intraobserver variability in the arteriographic assessment of the carotid bifurcation. Two neuroradiologists evaluated area stenosis and lumen surface morphology for 60 biplane carotid arteriograms in two reading sessions.

Thoracic bifurcation of the common carotid artery
Neuroradiology, 1973This study was based on angiographic records. We found that the bifurcation of the common carotid artery can be located amazingly low on the neck or even within the upper mediastinum. We have described five such instances; two bifurcations at the T3 level and three at T1-2 level.

Non-bifurcating cervical carotid artery
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2006Three cases of an extremely rare anomaly of the carotid artery are described herein. In these patients, the common carotid arteries, without bifurcation in the cervical portion, supplied multiple arterial branches, which are more commonly branches of the external carotid artery.

Convective mass transfer at the carotid bifurcation
Journal of Biomechanics, 1997The convective conditions in regions of hemodynamic separation may produce uneven local mass transfer at the arterial wall which may lead to an atherogenic response. This study estimates the potential variation in local mass transfer of oxygen at the human carotid bifurcation under steady flow conditions.
