We have studied a series of 24 cases of carotid body tumor, comprising our total experience during the past two decades. Twelve patients had symptoms related to compression or invasion of the surrounding structures. Two patients had malignant changes, while three individuals had bilateral lesions.

Originating from the afferent ganglion of the glossopharyngeal nerve, carotid body tumors are generally located at the carotid bifurcation. These tumors carry more blood flow per gram than any other tumor.

A kindred of four generations had eight individuals with known neck masses. Four of these were bilateral and four were unilateral. Five neck masses were proven carotid body tumors by pathological examination of tissue. Two presumptive diagnoses were made on the basis of history and old family photographs.

A 63-year old female was referred to our hospital because she had a mass on the right side of the neck. The swelling had slowly progressed in a couple of months. Besides problems with swallowing there were no other complaints. Her previous medical history was unremarkable and she could not remember any family members with similar lesions.
