GWAS and colocalization analyses implicate carotid intima-media thickness and carotid plaque loci in cardiovascular outcomes

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Carotid artery intima media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque are measures of subclinical atherosclerosis associated with ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD). Here, we undertake meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 71,

Targeted 2‐Deoxy‐D‐Ribose Delivery by Biomimetic Nanoplatform Activates EGFR for Accelerated Heart Valve Endothelialization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study develops a biomimetic nanoplatform using erythrocyte membrane‐camouflaged, CD144 antibody‐functionalized nanoparticles to deliver 2‐deoxy‐D‐ribose (2dDR). This system promotes heart valve endothelialization by enhancing endothelial cell migration and proliferation via EGFR activation, while improving hemocompatibility.

Carotid Atherosclerosis and Cerebral Microbleeds: The Framingham Heart Study

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2016
BackgroundCarotid atherosclerosis is associated with subclinical ischemic cerebrovascular disease, but its role in hemorrhage‐prone small vessel disease—represented by cerebral microbleed (CMB)—is unclear, although vascular risk factors underlie both ...

Rough Set Based Approach for IMT Automatic Estimation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Carotid artery (CA) intima-media thickness (IMT) is commonly deemed as one of the risk marker for cardiovascular diseases. The automatic estimation of the IMT on ultrasound images is based on the correct identification of the lumen-intima (LI) and media ...

A new perspective on metformin therapy in type 1 diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Metformin is quite frequently used off-label in type 1 diabetes to limit insulin dose requirement. Guidelines recommend that it can improve glucose control in those who are overweight and obese but evidence in support of this is limited.

Label‐Free Leukocyte Biophysical Profiling Using Impedance‐Deformability Cytometry for Rapid Cardiovascular Risk Stratification

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents an impedance‐based single‐cell profiling platform that quantifies the electrical and mechanical properties of neutrophils across in vitro, in vivo, and clinical samples. The approach reveals distinct biophysical alterations associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular complications, suggesting its potential utility for ...

Clinical utility of carotid ultrasonography: Application for the management of patients with diabetes

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, 2019
Carotid ultrasonography is a non‐invasive, simple and inexpensive modality to assess the severity of atherosclerosis. This article reviews related articles, summarizes the rationale for the application of carotid ultrasonography in clinical practice, and

Methotrexate use, not interleukin 33, is associated with lower carotid intima-media thickness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

open access: yesAdvances in Rheumatology, 2019
Background Rheumatoid arthritis is a risk factor for early mortality due to cardiovascular disease. Interleukin-33 appears to protect against the development of atherosclerosis.

Leucine‐Dependent SLC7A5–PGAM5 Interaction Promotes Advanced Atherosclerosis Through Hindering Mitochondrial Function of Macrophages

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Higher plasma leucine is associated with increased risk of new‐onset myocardial infarction. Leucine deprivation alleviates advanced atherosclerosis in mice. Tumor‐induced leucine deprivation reprograms macrophage metabolism and increases CD5Lhi macrophages in mouse plaques. Mechanistically, leucine deficiency reduced SLC7A5‐PGAM5 binding in macrophages,

Relationship between Dietary Intake and Body Composition with Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Patients with Transient Ischemic Attack

open access: yesمجله دانشکده پزشکی اصفهان, 2017
Background: Population-based studies in many countries have shown that carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) has a positive relationship with stroke. Some studies have suggested that many of the foods or body composition have effect on the risk of stroke.
