Clinical aspects of the equine carpal joints
Companion Animal, 2007articulations: the radiocarpal (or antebrachiocarpal), middle carpal and carpometacarpal joints. Of these, the middle and carpometacarpal joints always communicate. This fact is important to consider when performing intra-articular anaesthesia (joint blocks).

The function of the equine carpal joint: A review
New Zealand Veterinary Journal, 1995The most consistent published ideas on the function of the carpal joint of the horse concern the elasticity of the joint, and its limits to extension. Most of these are not well substantiated experimentally. Compression stress appears to be absorbed by the intercarpal ligaments as the carpal bones are separated by a wedge action during loading ...

Carpal Tunnel Volume after Basal Joint Arthroplasty in Postmenopausal Women
The Journal of Hand Surgery (Asian-Pacific Volume), 2022Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome is occasionally associated with basal joint arthritis and is more common in postmenopausal women than in the general population. Currently, more evidence is needed to describe changes in the carpal tunnel after basal joint arthroplasty (BJA) of the thumb and to determine whether it is better to combine the release of

Reliability of accessory motion testing at the carpal joints
Manual Therapy, 2009The testing of accessory motion has become a very important part of manual therapy practice. Its value is in assessing whether joint mobility is ideal or impaired. Despite its use, there is little evidence in the literature to support the reliability of such testing. Most of the research carried out on accessory motion testing has focused on the spine.

Risk analysis for a radio-carpal joint replacement
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, 2002Risk analysis is required by the medical device directives to provide evidence that manufacturers have eliminated or reduced risks as far as possible so that a medical device does not compromise the safety of patients or health workers. This paper presents a risk analysis for the Swanson wrist implant, which is made from an implantable-grade silicone ...

Symptomatic carpal coalition: scaphotrapezial joint.
American journal of orthopedics (Belle Mead, N.J.), 2014Carpal coalition is an uncommon congenital abnormality that arises from incomplete cavitation of the common cartilaginous precursor that forms the carpal bones. When carpal coalition is discovered, it is typically an asymptomatic incidental radiographic finding, and is often bilateral. We present a case of symptomatic unilateral carpal coalition of the

The carpal joint. Anatomy and function.
Hand clinics, 1987The carpal joint can be approached as a mechanism consisting of kinematic chains. In these chains, the proximal carpals function as intercalated segments. Intercarpal displacements are linked to one another and are based upon the mutual attuning of carpal bone geometry, joint contacts, and ligamentous interconnections.

Radiographic Measurements of the Radio-Carpal Joint in Normal Adults
Acta Radiologica. Diagnosis, 1976Radiography of 60 normal wrists was performed in 50 adults to determine the inclination of the distal joint surface of the radius. The central ray was directed 10 degrees proximally in postero-anterior projection and 15 degree proximally in lateral projection. The values obtained were compared with those from perpendicular projections.

The Influence of Joint Laxity on Periscaphoid Carpal Kinematics
Journal of Hand Surgery, 1997Our earlier studies have revealed a direct association between global wrist laxity and scaphoid motion. The present study was undertaken to determine what association, if any, there is between laxity and lunate and/or distal carpal row (represented by the hamate) kinematics.
