Arthritis of the Carpometacarpal Joint

2019
Osteoarthritis of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb is very common due to inherent wide range of motion of the joint. As high compressive and shear forces occur across the thumb CMC joint during pinch motion, ligament instability can lead to the subsequent development of arthritic changes.

Compression Arthrodesis of the Carpometacarpal Joint of the Thumb

Hand, 1982
Six cases of compression arthrodesis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint by the tension band technique are presented. All the cases healed in eight weeks or less. Complications as stiffness of other joints or osteoporosis are avoided by this method.

Dorsal dislocation of the fifth carpometacarpal joint

The Journal of Hand Surgery, 1990
A case of isolated dorsal dislocation of the fifth carpometacarpal joint treated conservatively is reported. The mechanism is thought to be a force hitting the head of the fifth metacarpal in a dorso-palmar direction, along the longitudinal axis of the metacarpal. Both clinical and radiological results 1 year after injury are satisfactory.

Contact areas in the thumb carpometacarpal joint

Journal of Orthopaedic Research, 1995
AbstractThe thumb carpometacarpal joint is a common site of osteoarthritis. It has been hypothesized that peaks of localized stress on the dorsoradial or volar‐ulnar regions, or both, of the articular surfaces of the trapezium and metacarpal lead to erosion of cartilage and may be responsible for the progression of the disease.

Dorsal dislocation of the index carpometacarpal joint

The Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2000
Dorsal dislocations of the index metacarpal are rare occurrences. A case is presented with an unusual mechanism of injury. Successful management included open reduction and internal temporary fixation of the involved joint.

Traumatic dislocation of the first carpometacarpal joint

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2014
We present a case report and review of the literature of traumatic dislocation of the carpometacarpal joint of the left thumb without associated fracture. The injury was sustained while skiing, and after emergency department diagnosis, the dislocation was reduced and the joint stabilized with a splint.

Carpometacarpal Joint Osteoarthritis

2017
The carpometacarpal joint (CMC), with its complex demands of both stability and mobility, is prone to arthritis for a variety of reasons. The CMC joint is formed by the trapezium bone of the wrist and the first metacarpal bone of the thumb. Due to its relative instability, this joint is a common site of pain. CMC osteoarthritis (OA) of the thumb occurs

ULNAR DISLOCATION OF FIFTH CARPOMETACARPAL JOINT

Hand Surgery, 2005
Carpometacarpal dislocations may be dorsal, volar or divergent type but most are dorsal with involvement of 4th and 5th metacarpal. We are reporting first case of ulnar type of unilateral dislocation of 5th carpometacarpal joint.

Traumatic Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint Dislocations

The Journal of Hand Surgery, 2008
Isolated traumatic dislocation of the thumb carpometacarpal joint, also called the trapeziometacarpal joint, is a rare injury. Controversy still exists concerning which ligaments are the true key stabilizers for the joint and therefore need to be damaged to result in dislocation, and optimal treatment strategies for thumb carpometacarpal joint ...

Basal Thumb Joint (Carpometacarpal Joint)

2011
Degenerative or inflammatory arthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint. This is a very common condition and presents with radial hand or wrist pain and loss of grip strength. Failure of conservative methods is an indication for injection therapy. Other small joints in the hand can be injected in a similar way.
