Sensory cues predicting resource quality are drivers of key animal behaviors such as preference or aversion. Despite the abundance of behavioral choice studies across the animal kingdom, relatively few studies have tested whether these decisions are ...

Twist Quantization of String and Hopf Algebraic Symmetry [PDF]
We describe the twist quantization of string worldsheet theory, which unifies the description of quantization and the target space symmetry, based on the twisting of Hopf and module algebras.

Insects have an important role in minimum postmortem interval (PMImin) estimation. An accurate PMImin estimation relies on a comprehensive study of the development and succession of local carrion insects.

During decomposition, vertebrate carrion emits volatile organic compounds to which insects and other scavengers are attracted. We have previously found that the dung beetle, Anoplotrupes stercorosus, is the most common dung beetle found on vertebrate ...

The authors develop a deep learning model for real‐time tracking of wound progression. The deep learning framework maps the nonlinear evolution of a time series of images to a latent space, where they learn a linear representation of the dynamics. The linear model is interpretable and suitable for applications in feedback control.

The removal of wild boar carcasses is one of the first important countermeasures after an ASF outbreak. Thermal imagers that visualise body temperature are already in use for selective carcass detection. In addition to carrion-specific infrared radiation

Shallow-Water Scavengers of Polar Night and Day – An Arctic Time-Lapse Photography Study
Until recently, polar night constituted truly a “mare incognitum” of our times. Yet, the first records from this very little-explored period showcased a surprisingly rich and active ecosystem.

ABSTRACT The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) nests in rock cavities where it accumulates prey bone remains during the breeding season. Because nests can be reoccupied from year to year, these faunal elements can form remarkable bone accumulations and, in the sub‐fossil record, be mixed with assemblages derived from human or other predator activities ...

Soil Fungal Communities Investigated by Metabarcoding Within Simulated Forensic Burial Contexts
Decomposition of animal bodies in the burial environment plays a key role in the biochemistry of the soil, altering the balance of the local microbial populations present before the introduction of the carcass.
