The case-crossover study design in pharmacoepidemiology

Statistical Methods in Medical Research, 2009
In the study of the association of transient drug exposures with acute outcomes, the case-crossover design is an efficient alternative to the case-control approach. This design based exclusively on the case series uses within-subject comparisons of drug exposures over time to estimate the rate ratio of the outcome associated with the drug under study.

Interpretation and bias in case-crossover studies

Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, 1997
The case-crossover design is an innovative epidemiologic technique with distinct strengths and limitations. We review the fundamental logic of this self-matching non-randomized design and direct attention to 15 concerns related to the available data, unavailable data, analytic technique, quantitative statistics, and etiologic model.

Alcohol and injury. A case-crossover study

Archives of Family Medicine, 1995
To determine whether and to what extent alcohol consumption increases the risk of injury. The case-crossover study is a new research design for assessing rare acute events (such as trauma) in relation to intermittent exposures (such as alcohol use) that have transient effects.

Behavioral trigger factors for hemorrhagic stroke: a case-crossover study

Postgraduate Medical Journal, 2023
Abstract Background The role and extent of the effects of short-term behavioral factors on the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) are unclear. This study aimed to assess and quantify behavioral trigger factors (BTFs) for HS and identify the differences in BTFs between Chinese and other populations.

Within‐subject exposure dependency in case‐crossover studies

Statistics in Medicine, 2001
AbstractIn the case‐crossover design, only cases are sampled and the hazard ratio is estimated from within‐subject comparisons of exposures at the event time and in M control periods prior to the event. We consider the effect of within‐subject dependence of exposures in successive time periods.

Differential Misclassification of Exposure in Case-Crossover Studies

Epidemiology, 2004
The aim of this study is to examine 2 types of differential misclassification of exposure in case-crossover studies. The first is the outcome-dependent misclassification of exposure, meaning that if an event has occurred, it could affect the reporting of exposure.

Semiparametric time varying coefficient model for matched case‐crossover studies

Statistics in Medicine, 2016
In matched case‐crossover studies, it is generally accepted that the covariates on which a case and associated controls are matched cannot exert a confounding effect on independent predictors included in the conditional logistic regression model. This is because any stratum effect is removed by the conditioning on the fixed number of sets of the case ...

Fluoroquinolone use and serious arrhythmias: A nationwide case-crossover study

Resuscitation, 2019
Fluoroquinolones have been associated with life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and even sudden cardiac death. We aimed to assess the temporal relationship of fluoroquinolone use and serious arrhythmias via a case-crossover analysis of a large cohort of serious arrhythmias patients. In a national administrative database, we compare the distributions
