The importance of hemodialysis in intoxications with 3 case reports

open access: yes, 2020
Introduction: While many intoxication cases are cured with medical treatment, antidote therapy and symptomatic treatment; some cases may need hemodialysis treatment or even invasive mechanical ventilation support.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Holmium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) laser for resection of bladder tumor in a pediatric patient

open access: yes, 2015
Bladder tumours are rare in children, with only 0.4% of cases occurring in the first 2 decades of life. Herein, a pediatric patient who underwent TUR-B with a holmium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) laser is presented.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Preventive measures to avoid vertical transmission in untreated pregnant women with HIV/AIDS

open access: yes, 2020
The HIV/AIDS during pregnancy has high morbidity and mortality, without optimal prevention and treatment. The advanced stage cases are found in developing countries due to late detection, but, also in developed countries due to immigration; therefore ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Molecular analysis of appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma and rectal adenocarcinoma in a patient with urothelial carcinoma: a case report

open access: yes, 2013
Introduction: In this report, we present the case of a patient affected by appendiceal cystadenoma, a colorectal adenocarcinoma, and a concomitant bladder carcinoma, as well as the results of the molecular study of the most relevant mutational pathways ...
