WRKY71 regulates lignin biosynthesis genes, promoting apoplastic barrier formation and enhancing salt exclusion in roots

open access: yesPlant Stress
The Casparian strip (CS) and suberin form the apoplastic barrier, which blocks solute entry into the vascular stele under high-salt conditions. Here, transcriptome analysis of Arabidopsis roots during three stages of apoplastic barrier development ...

Geochemical behaviour of rare earths in Vitis vinifera grafted onto different rootstocks and growing on several soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The geochemical behaviour of lanthanides and yttrium(Rare Earth Elements, REEs) has been investigatedmainly in geological systems where these elements represent the best proxies of processes involving the occurrence of an interface between different ...

Lateral root initiation in Arabidopsis thaliana: a force awakens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Osmotically driven turgor pressure of plant cells can be higher than that of a car tire. It puts tremendous forces onto cell walls and drives cell growth and changes in cell shape.

Influence of Soil Chemistry and Plant Physiology in the Phytoremediation of Cu, Mn, and Zn [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Different anthropogenic sources of metals can result from agricultural, industrial, military, mining and urban activities that contribute to environmental pollution.

The GLV6/RGF8/CLEL2 peptide regulates early pericycle divisions during lateral root initiation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Small peptides of the Arabidopsis GLV/RGF/CLEL family are involved in different developmental programmes, including meristem maintenance and gravitropic responses.

Structure of the Casparian strip: an artwork knitted by cells

open access: yesPLANT MORPHOLOGY, 2000
Summary: The structure of the Casparian strip was first described by the German botanist Robert Caspary in the 19th century. The function of the Casparian strip as an apoplastic barrier for solute transport is now fairly well understood. However, up to now the formation and the development of the Casparian strip is still an open question not only for ...

Anatomical Development of Phi Thickening and the Casparian Strip in Loquat Roots

open access: yesJournal of the Japanese Society for Horticultural Science, 2006
The anatomical development of cell wall ingrowth (phi thickening) in the cortical tissue adjacent to the endodermis and Casparian strip in endodermal cells was investigated in loquat roots. Phi thickening initially appeared simultaneously approximately 10 mm from the root tip and expanded as the distance from the root tip increased.

Sulfated peptides: key players in plant development, growth, and stress responses

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Peptide hormones regulate plant development, growth, and stress responses. Sulfated peptides represent a class of proteins that undergo posttranslational modification by tyrosylprotein sulfotransferase (TPST), followed by specific enzymatic cleavage to ...
