Phantasmic Encounters in the Arctic: Haunting Materialities Beyond the Ghosts of War

open access: yesAnthropology of Consciousness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In the vast north, ghostly experiences are common for locals and outsiders alike. Here, we explore how cultural‐natural attributes, like remoteness and extreme seasonal variation, compound experiences of the haunting in visceral ways. This provides the Arctic region with an unusually pronounced baseline of other‐than‐human agency, which in the

The evolutionary history of ultra-compact accreting binaries

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) stars are ultra-compact binary systems composed of a white dwarf primary accreting from a hydrogen-deficient donor.

Exploring Tolerance Towards Corruption in the European Union Through Experienced Corruption, Perceived Corruption and Institutional Trust

open access: yesBusiness Ethics, the Environment &Responsibility, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Corruption is a major problem that undermines the foundations of democracy and reduces citizens' trust in institutions. However, even in the world's most advanced countries, citizens accept certain levels of corruption. This tolerance towards corruption (TC) reduces the impact of anti‐corruption actions and ends up giving a patina of normality

Transient Processes in a Binary System with a White Dwarf

open access: yesActa Polytechnica CTU Proceedings, 2015
Using the results of 3D gas dynamic numerical simulations we propose a mechanism that can explain the quiescent multihumped shape of light curves of WZ Sge short-period cataclysmic variable stars.

Search for brown-dwarf like secondaries in cataclysmic variables II

open access: yes, 2003
We have examined VTL/ISAAC 1-2.5 $\umu$m spectroscopy of a sample of short orbital period cataclysmic variables which are candidates for harboring substellar companions. We provide descriptions of the infrared spectrum of \hbox{EI Psc}, \hbox{V834 Cen}, \

Discovery of a New Classical Nova Shell Around a Nova-like Cataclysmic Variable [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The morphology and optical spectrum of IPHASX J210204.7+471015, a nebula classified as a possible planetary nebula are, however, strikingly similar to those of AT Cnc, a classical nova shell around a dwarf nova.

‘I Don't Want Another Five Years of “The Only Thing We Talk About Is Brexit”’: The Dynamics of EU (De)politicisation in Post‐Brexit Britain

open access: yesJCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract The 2016 Brexit referendum was a watershed moment for the politicisation of the European Union (EU) in the United Kingdom. Much has been written about the politicising effects of the referendum, along with the Leave result's subsequent contestation in the media as well as in national and European election cycles.

PARALLAX AND DISTANCE ESTIMATES FOR TWELVE CATACLYSMIC VARIABLE STARS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2008
We report parallax and distance estimates for twelve more cataclysmic binaries and related objects observed with the 2.4m Hiltner telescope at MDM Observatory. The final parallax accuracy is typically about 1 mas. For only one of the twelve objects, IR Gem, do we fail to detect a significant parallax.

Molecular Alterations in Osteosarcomas of the Oral and Maxillofacial Region: A Scoping Review

open access: yesJournal of Oral Pathology &Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Given the rarity and aggressive nature of osteosarcomas (OS) in the oral and maxillofacial region, understanding their molecular alterations is essential to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and guide targeted therapies. This study aimed to map molecular alterations associated with oral and maxillofacial OS, providing an overview of the
