Three unusual cataclysmic variable stars
Nature, 1983A recent survey for variable objects1 using an automated search procedure detected a number of variables for which it was only possible to give a preliminary classification. Many of the sample have now been observed spectroscopically on a large telescope and definite classifications made.

Optical Properties of Cataclysmic Variable Stars
1990An overview is given of the optical behavior of cataclysmic variables, including the various types, the canonical model of these close binary systems, the causes of eruptions, short-term variations, and orbital periods, and correlations of light curve parameters with physical properties.

Visible and Infrared Studies of Cataclysmic Variable Stars
1983The purpose of this Thesis is to investigate the infrared properties of Cataclysmic Variable Stars, in particular, to develop the techniques needed to study the contributions to the infrared light of the red dwarf and the accretion disc around its white dwarf companion. A particular requirement of these techniques is that they do not rely on a model of

Observations of Cataclysmic Variable and Double Degenerate Stars
2001In this chapter I will discuss cataclysmic variable stars and close pairs of white dwarfs or “double degenerates”. These stars are connected through their evolution, but in this case also because they are personal interests of mine. The detailed topics that I discuss are also personal choices and I make no attempt to be comprehensive in my coverage ...

A spectroscopic analysis of three cataclysmic variable stars [PDF]
Cataclysmic variable stars (CVs) are binary systems in which matter is transferred from a low mass star to a white dwarf via an accretion disc. My thesis is a spectroscopic study of three of these objects: U Gem, GD 552 and GY Cnc. I present high-resolution optical spectra of U Gem taken during quiescent.

Probing the system parameters of cataclysmic variable stars [PDF]
Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) are close binary stars in which a low mass star is losing material onto its companion, a white dwarf, via an accretion disc. This thesis presents an analysis of the optical spectra of these objects.New orbital parameters are presented for a particular system, EM Cygni, which was previously thought to contain a white dwarf ...
