Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

1993
Cataclysmic variables (hereafter CVs) are close binaries in which a white dwarf accretes from a low mass companion, usually close to the main sequence. If the white dwarfhas a magnetic field of ≳ 105 G, the accretion flow will differ markedly from that expected in the non-magnetic case (see the chapter by Meyer-Hofmeister).

Extragalactic Cataclysmic Variables

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
SALT is uniquely poised to make major inroads in the study of extragalactic cataclysmic variables (CVs) — novae and dwarf novae. The ability to search an external galaxy for erupting CVs night after night, for months at a time, AND to obtain confirmatory spectra within a night of discovery is unique and invaluable.

Cataclysmic Variable Stars

1995
The study of cataclysmic variables - interacting binary stars containing a white dwarf accreting from an orbiting companion - is undergoing an exciting renaissance, as it embraces observations at all wavelengths. Cataclysmic variables allow, in particular, the direct and detailed study of equilibrium and non-equilibrium accretion discs; in turn these ...

INTEGRAL and Cataclysmic Variables

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2010
The results of investigations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) with the ESA INTEGRAL satellite are briefly presented and discussed. It is evident that the satellite serves as an efficient tool to study some of these objects.

Winds from cataclysmic variables

Advances in Space Research, 1988
Current understanding of the winds from Cataclysmic Variables is discussed, with particular emphasis on the understanding and modeling of the line profiles. Recent efforts at constructing such models are summarized, and a dynamical model is constructed which may serve to illustrate some of the physical principles acting in CV winds.

Cataclysmic and Symbiotic Variables

2002
A cataclysmic variable (CV) [1,2] is a binary star system in which a white dwarf primary accretes hydrogen-rich material usually through an accretion disk from a Roche lobe filling secondary that is on or near the main sequence. The CVs consist of several classes such as classical novae, recurrent novae, nova-likes, dwarf novae, helium CVs, and ...
