Detached cataclysmic variables are crossing the orbital period gap [PDF]
A central hypothesis in the theory of cataclysmic variable (CV) evolution is the need to explain the observed lack of accreting systems in the ~2-3 h orbital period range, known as the period gap.

Rapid oscillations in cataclysmic variables [PDF]
I give an overview of the rich phenomenology of dwarf nova oscillations (DNOs) and Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) observed in cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). The favoured interpretation of these rapid brightness modulations (3 - >1000 s time scales) is that they are magnetic in nature - magnetically channelled accretion from the inner ...

Non-conservative Evolution of Cataclysmic Variables [PDF]
We suggest a new mechanism to account for the loss of angular momentum in binaries with non-conservative mass exchange. It is shown that in some cases the loss of matter can result in increase of the orbital angular momentum of a binary. If included into

Brown dwarfs in retrogradely precessing cataclysmic variables?
We compare Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic simulations of retrogradely precessing accretion disks that have a white dwarf primary and a main sequence secondary with observational data and with theory on retrograde precession via tidal torques like those ...

White dwarf masses in cataclysmic variables
The white dwarf (WD) mass distribution of cataclysmic variables (CVs) has recently been found to dramatically disagree with the predictions of the standard CV formation model.

Ultraviolet observations of cataclysmic variables [PDF]
AbstractThe preliminary results of the analysis of more than 1000 spectra of cataclysmic variables in the archive of the International Ultraviolet Explorer were presented at the meeting. To characterize the slope of the spectra I use F = log(f1460Å/f2880Å). For most spectra F lies between 0.2 and 0.7.

Spectroscopically Identified Cataclysmic Variables from the LAMOST Survey. II. Period Estimates
We examine a sample of 340 cataclysmic variables (CVs) from the latest data release of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey, along with 18 objects that are newly classified as CVs.

A strike for democracy? Migration, the bigot's veto, and the electoral use of force
Abstract Politicians and philosophers alike have warned that the spread of anti‐migrant bigotry in the Western world requires a tragic trade‐off regarding immigration policy: Although millions of asylum‐seekers might be owed admission to Western democracies, there are many cases where they nonetheless ought to be denied entry, because their admission ...
