Polanyi on crisis: The United States, fascism and ecological break‐down

open access: yesJournal of Law and Society, Volume 53, Issue S1, Page S131-S150, April 2026.
Abstract This article uses Karl Polanyi's understanding of the crisis inherent in liberal economics to analyse a contemporary crisis—Trump's global tariff agenda. It argues that Trump's tariff agenda conforms to Polanyi's interpretation of how the crisis of liberal economics can disintegrate into more malignant forces.

Evolution of cataclysmic variables under different magnetic braking prescriptions

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. The evolution of cataclysmic variables (CVs) – interacting binaries where a low-mass donor transfers matter to a white dwarf via an accretion disk – is critically controlled by magnetic braking (MB).

Cataclysmic Variables from SDSS: A Review and A Look Forward to LSST

open access: yesActa Polytechnica CTU Proceedings, 2015
The past and current projects of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are reviewed in the context of applicability and results for cataclysmic variables. Ongoing and future time domain surveys that will have impact on the field are also briefly discussed.

Discovering Cataclysmic Variables from the Rubin Observatory LSST

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will provide a windfall of new transients and variable sources. Here we have performed mock observation simulations to understand LSST’s expected detection rates for cataclysmic ...

Temporary Equilibrium Mass Transfer Rate in Cataclysmic Variables?

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The separation of a binary system increases or decreases over time, governed by angular momentum (AM) changes. In cataclysmic variables (CVs), Roche-lobe overflow from the red dwarf (RD) to the white dwarf (WD) redistributes AM within the system through ...

New Observations of the Old Magnetic Nova GQ Muscae

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2014
Photometric observations of GQ Mus performed between 1992 and 2011 are reported. We find that the total amplitude of the orbital modulation of its brightness decreased from ~ 0.9 mag in 1992 to ~ 0.2 mag in 2010, becoming comparable to the amplitude of ...

Cataclysmic Variable Stars [PDF]

open access: yesHighlights of Astronomy, 1998
The evolution of single stars on and away from the main sequence is well understood. A degenerate core is formed in a star as the star leaves the main sequence and expands to a giant with a radius typically 50 - 500 Ro . Observationally it is known that most stars are members of binary systems, and among these many have orbital periods less than 100 y.

Early Photometric and Spectral Evolution of Nova Cygni 2014 (V2659 Cyg)

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2015
We present optical spectroscopic and UBV (RI)C photometric observations of Nova Cygni 2014 (V2659 Cyg) from its rebrightening to the nebular stage. After the first maximum, the nova underwent several irregular flare-like rebrightenings, with amplitudes ...

Cyclical Period Changes in Cataclysmic Variables: A Statistical Study

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We report the results of a statistical study of cyclical period changes in cataclysmic variables (CVs). Assuming the third-body hypothesis as the cause of period changes, we estimate the third-body mass, m _3 , and its separation from the binary, a _3 ...
