Determinants of out-of-pocket health expenditure and their welfare implications in a South African context

open access: yesJournal of Economic and Financial Sciences, 2018
This study aims to quantify the extent of catastrophic household health expenditures on welfare and determine factors influencing it. A logistic regression model based on the logit link function was used to predict the probability of catastrophic health ...

Lattice Structures for Bone Replacement: The Intersection of Bone Biomechanics, Lattice Design, and Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review outlines how understanding bone's biology, hierarchical architecture, and mechanical anisotropy informs the design of lattice structures that replicate bone morphology and mechanical behavior. Additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of orthopedic implants that incorporate such structures using a range of engineering materials ...

Use of high-level health facilities and catastrophic expenditure in Vietnam: can health insurance moderate this relationship?

open access: yesBMC Health Services Research, 2019
Background Overcrowding of high-level health facilities is a major concern in a Vietnamese health system. This may increase an economic burden to the households since health insurance is still insufficient in providing financial risk protection.

Improving the Robustness of Visual Teach‐and‐Repeat Navigation Using Drift Error Correction and Event‐Based Vision for Low‐Light Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Visual teach‐and‐repeat (VTR) navigation allows robots to learn and follow routes without building a full metric map. We show that navigation accuracy for VTR can be improved by integrating a topological map with error‐drift correction based on stereo vision.

Continual Learning for Multimodal Data Fusion of a Soft Gripper

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Models trained on a single data modality often struggle to generalize when exposed to a different modality. This work introduces a continual learning algorithm capable of incrementally learning different data modalities by leveraging both class‐incremental and domain‐incremental learning scenarios in an artificial environment where labeled data is ...

Informal employment and catastrophic health expenditures: Evidence from Pakistan

open access: yesThe International Journal of Health Planning and Management, 2023
AbstractWorkers in informal employment suffered significant out‐of‐pocket healthcare expenditures (OOPHEs) due to their low earnings and a lack of a social safety net or health insurance. There is little or no evidence of impoverishment caused by OOPHEs in the context of labor market categorization. Therefore, this study examines the economic burden of
