Nonplanar Bouligand Architectures for Enhanced Mechanical Performance in Cementitious Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by the impact region of the Mantis shrimp dactyl club, nonplanar additive manufacturing translates sinusoidal Bouligand architectures into cementitious composites. Printing‐induced anisotropy and architected interfaces promote distributed damage and arrest crack propagation, enhancing strength and energy absorption.

Beyond Passivation: Designing Structurally Tailored Artificial Interphases for High‐Energy Lithium‐Based Anodes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This review outlines critical engineering design rules for building artificial protective coatings on next‐generation lithium metal and silicon battery anodes. It highlights how balancing structural flexibility with strict electronic and ionic transport limits prevents early battery failure.

Caloric Catastrophe

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1973
Six solutes known to be actively transported by bacteria were studied with the cell in a "minimum energy" state to determine if sufficient energy were available from cellular stores of ATP to supply the energy necessary to run postulated membrane-situated "pumps." Steady-state cellular concentrations of potassium, calcium, magnesium, leucine, glycine ...

Development of a Solid‐Liquid Hybrid Electrolyte Composed of LiTa2PO8 and [C2mim][FSA]–Li[FSA] Ionic Liquid for Rechargeable Lithium Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
LiTa2PO8 (LTPO) suffers from high interfacial resistance when paired with Li metal due to poor solid‐solid contact. Coating LTPO with an ionic liquid (IL) markedly improves interfacial stability, maintaining favorable resistance up to 2000 cycles. However, contact between IL‐coated LTPO and Li metal induces discoloration of LTPO, which is attributed to

The Cesarean Catastrophe [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Perinatal Education, 2006
The cesarean rate has reached an all-time high at 29.1% of all births in the United States. In this column, the risks inherent in cesareans are discussed within the context of the current climate of "intervention-intensive" labor and birth, forced cesareans, the precipitate decrease in vaginal births after cesarean, and the alarming increase in primary

Hierarchical Multi‐Material Architectures With Gradient Design for Dynamic‐Range Flexible Tactile Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Hierarchical multi‐material TPMS lattices are engineered as flexible tactile sensors by combining soft and stiff elastomeric layers with a conformal conductive coating. The bilayer architecture delivers sensitivity at low pressures while maintaining a broad detectable range under large loads, enabling reliable pressure and vibration monitoring for ...

Programmable Crack Networks for Wide‐Range and Reversible Strain Sensing in Vertically Oriented van der Waals Molybdenum Disulfide Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Vertically oriented van der Waals MoS2 thin films enable a mechanically programmable crack network for strain sensing. The initial mechanical programming protocol establishes a programmed crack configuration along weak interlayer and interdomain interfaces.
