Catching Pneumonia [PDF]

open access: yesStructure, 2010
Many Gram-positive bacteria have pili attached to their cell walls, but they are much simpler and shorter than their more familiar Gram-negative analogs. The structure of an “adhesin” from the tip of the pneumococcal pilus (Izoré et al., 2010) reveals intradomain insertions of eukaryotic origin that may hold the key to systemic invasion.

NanoMOF‐Based Multilevel Anti‐Counterfeiting by a Combination of Visible and Invisible Photoluminescence and Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents novel anti‐counterfeiting tags with multilevel security features that utilize additional disguise features. They combine luminescent nanosized Ln‐MOFs with conductive polymers to multifunctional mixed‐matrix membranes and powder composites. The materials exhibit visible/NIR emission and matrix‐based conductivity even as black bodies.

Evaluation of the impact of different summer catch crops on continuous cropping soil properties under plastic tunnel cultivation

open access: yesVegetable Research
In China, the issue of facility succession disorder is widespread. Summer catch crop is an effective method for overcoming the continuous cropping barrier in facility vegetables. In this study, we designed six summer filling treatments, reporting for the

A model analysis on nitrate leaching under different soil and climate conditions and use of catch crops [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The use of crops and catch crops with deep rooting can strongly improve the possibility of retaining nitrate-N that will otherwise be leached to the deeper soil layers and end up in the surrounding environment.

Biomass Native Structure Into Functional Carbon‐Based Catalysts for Fenton‐Like Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study indicates that eight biomasses with 2D flaky and 1D acicular structures influence surface O types, morphology, defects, N doping, sp2 C, and Co nanoparticles loading in three series of carbon, N‐doped carbon, and cobalt/graphitic carbon. This work identifies how these structural factors impact catalytic pathways, enhancing selective electron

Advanced Flame Retardant Strategies and Fire Performance Assessment for Safer Photovoltaics in Buildings: A Two‐Part Review

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems into building structures introduces distinct fire risks with critical implications for occupant safety. This review examines the key fire hazards associated with PV implementation and explores mitigation strategies, including flame‐retardant additives.

Policies for promoting technological catching up: towards post-Washington approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper analyses the evolution of policies for technology catch-up through three periods: import-substitution, (augmented) Washington consensus and post-Washington period. We analyse the dominant policy models and practices in each of these periods as
