Human Perception as a Phenomenon of Quantization

open access: yesEntropy, 2022

Categorical Local-Shape Perception [PDF]

open access: yesPerception, 1996
How well do observers perceive the local shape of an object from its shaded image? This problem was addressed by first deriving a potential representation of local solid shape. The descriptor of local shape, called shape characteristic, provides a viewpoint-independent continuum between hyperbolic (saddle-shaped) and elliptic (egg-shaped) points.

Top-Down Modulation on the Perception and Categorization of Identical Pitch Contours in Speech and Music

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2016
Whether pitch in language and music is governed by domain-specific or domain-general cognitive mechanisms is contentiously debated. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether mechanisms governing pitch contour perception operate differently ...

Categorical perception of stereoscopic stimuli [PDF]

open access: yesPerception & Psychophysics, 1981
Two studies of the stereopsis model of Richards were conducted using a between-subjects balanced design and a repeated trials procedure rather than the within-subjects procedure of Richards. Measures of the accuracy of discrimination between classes of retinal disparity were defined by the method of successive intervals in place of the d’ index of SDT.

Kõnetaju kategoriaalsus ehk hüpotees sellest, kuidas me keelelisi üksusi tajume

open access: yesEesti ja Soome-ugri Keeleteaduse Ajakiri, 2013
Erinevate häälikute laad meie igapäevases kõnes varieerub tugevalt, kuid häälduse varieeruvus ei ole enamasti kõneeristusele takistuseks. See annab alust oletada, et kõnetaju on välja arendanud süsteemi, millega tuvastada foneeme väga suure ...

Categorical perception of tactile distance [PDF]

open access: yesCognition, 2014
The tactile surface forms a continuous sheet covering the body. And yet, the perceived distance between two touches varies across stimulation sites. Perceived tactile distance is larger when stimuli cross over the wrist, compared to when both fall on either the hand or the forearm.

Unraveling Spatial-Spectral Dynamics of Speech Categorization Speed Using Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesBrain Sciences, 2022
The process of categorizing sounds into distinct phonetic categories is known as categorical perception (CP). Response times (RTs) provide a measure of perceptual difficulty during labeling decisions (i.e., categorization).
