Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Cathartic narratives for chaotic thinking [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Medical Association Journal, 2016
Two years with severe, chronic lower back pain feels like an eternity, yet people in my pain support group have endured pain for decades. They talk about their losses: employment, education, socializing, marriages, relationships, powerful emotions, spirituality, homes, recreation and freedom ...

A cellular system to study responses to a collision between the transcription complex and a protein‐bound nick in the DNA template

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present the cellular transcription‐coupled Flp‐nick system allowing the introduction of a Top1‐mimicking cleavage complex (Flpcc) at a Flp recognition target site within a controllable LacZ gene. LacZ transcription leads to the collision of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) with Flpcc, and this causes RNAPII stalling, ubiquitination, and degradation.

Is Bowel Preparation Necessary Before kidney-Ureter-Bladder Radiography and Intravenous Urography?

open access: yesUrology Journal, 2012
PURPOSE: To assess whether bowel preparation prior to kidney-ureter-bladder (KUB) radiography and intravenous urography (IVU) are of value in improving visualization of the urinary system.

Preventing surgical site infections: a surgeon's perspective. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Wound site infections are a major source of postoperative illness, accounting for approximately a quarter of all nosocomial infections. National studies have defined the patients at highest risk for infection in general and in many specific operative ...

Interaction vesicles as emerging mediators of host‐pathogen molecular crosstalk and their implications for infection dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interaction extracellular vesicles (iEVs) are hybrid vesicles formed through host‐pathogen communication. They facilitate immune evasion, transfer pathogens' molecules, increase host cell uptake, and enhance virulence. This Perspective article illustrates the multifunctional roles of iEVs and highlights their emerging relevance in infection dynamics ...

Prospective Study of Bowel Movement, Laxative Use, and Risk of Colorectal Cancer among Women [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The authors prospectively examined the association between bowel movement frequency, laxative use, and the risk of colorectal cancer in 84, 577 women of the Nurses' Health Study living in the United States, 36-61 years of age and free of cancer in 1982 ...
