Autonomic Failure in Guillain-Barré Syndrome— Value of Swan-Ganz Catheterization
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1979To the Editor.— Idiopathic polyneuritis (Guillain-Barre syndrome) is a distinctive disorder characterized by ascending paralysis, areflexia, and elevated CSF protein. Sudden death is seen, and although there are numerous possibilities in these bedridden patients (eg, myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism), it has been assumed that the bulk of ...

Of 178 transseptal left heart catheterizations performed, 173 successful cases are reported, with the use of a Swan-Ganz, flow-directed, balloon-tipped catheter. By means of a modified Brockenbrough technique, which is described in detail, a 10F Teflon tube (3.3 mm outside diameter) was inserted into the left atrium.

Deep-Vein Thrombosis Mimicking Acute Appendicitis
JAMA, 1982IN THE very young and the elderly, acute appendicitis commonly has an atypical presentation and a high perforation rate.1It represents a difficult clinical challenge. The surgical and nonsurgical conditions that mimic acute appendicitis are well known.2The overall rate of a normal appendix at appendectomy is 20%, and the rate is much higher in women ...

Indications for Swan-Ganz catheterization.
Heart disease and stroke : a journal for primary care physicians, 1994The Swan-Ganz catheter provides a relatively easy means of obtaining a wealth of information about intracardiac pressures and flows. The catheter also is useful for intracardiac pacing. Because any invasive procedure entails some risk, albeit small in the case of the Swan-Ganz catheter, insertion of a catheter usually is reserved for hemodynamically ...

[Pulmonary thromboembolic complications of catheterization using the Swan-Ganz catheter].
Presse medicale (Paris, France : 1983), 1983Twenty-two adult patients who had required catheterization with a Swan-Ganz catheter and had thrombosis of the internal jugular vein were investigated for pulmonary embolism. In 4 of these, pulmonary embolism was detected by angiography, and 2 patients who died with the catheter in situ had also pulmonary embolism.
