The smallest N. Am. red-winged species known. It has a resemblance to polygama and fratercula in the ornamentation of the primaries. Fore wings gray, shaded with blackish; lines black. A diffuse basal black shade. T. a. line diffusely shaded with black. Reniform small, yellowish, more or less distinctly double ringed.
