On the Skew-Normal-Cauchy Distribution

open access: yesCommunications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 2010
In this article, we study further properties of a skew normal distribution, called the skew-normal-Cauchy (SNC) distribution by Nadarajah and Kotz (2003). A stochastic representation is obtained which allows alternative derivations for moments, moments generating function, and skewness and kurtosis coefficients.

Cauchy Single-Valued Neutrosophic Numbers and Their Applications in MAGDM [PDF]

open access: yesNeutrosophic Sets and Systems, 2022
The neutrosophic sets and numbers have an important role in modeling the problems. Recently, studies on neutrosophic numbers and single-valued neutrosophic numbers which is a subclass of neutrosophic numbers have increased, rapidly.

Evidence for a normal distribution of normalized gains

open access: yesPhysical Review Physics Education Research, 2023
Recently Burkholder et al. argued that class normalized gains over the entire population of courses is approximated by a Cauchy distribution, not by a normal distribution, and therefore should not be used to compare different classes because means and ...

On the Kolmogorov Distance for the Maximum Likelihood Estimator in the Explosive Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Process

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Mathematical Analysis, 2023
The paper estimates the Kolmogorov distance between the distribution of the normalized maximum likelihood estimator of the positive drift parameter in the nonergodic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the standard Cauchy distribution and shows exponential ...

Isotropic cosmological singularities 3: The Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous conformal Einstein-Vlasov equations [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
We consider the conformal Einstein equations for massless collisionless gas cosmologies which admit an isotropic singularity. It is shown that the Cauchy problem for these equations is well-posed with data consisting of the limiting particle distribution

Advanced Cauchy Mutation for Differential Evolution in Numerical Optimization

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Among many evolutionary algorithms, differential evolution (DE) has received much attention over the last two decades. DE is a simple yet powerful evolutionary algorithm that has been used successfully to optimize various real-world problems.

On the half-Cauchy prior for a global scale parameter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper argues that the half-Cauchy distribution should replace the inverse-Gamma distribution as a default prior for a top-level scale parameter in Bayesian hierarchical models, at least for cases where a proper prior is necessary.

A note on invariance of the Cauchy and related distributions [PDF]

open access: yesStatistics & Probability Letters, 2020
It is known that if $f$ is an analytic self map of the complex upper half-plane which also maps $\mathbb{R}\cup\{\infty\}$ to itself, and $f(i)=i$, then $f$ preserves the Cauchy distribution. This note concerns three results related to the above fact.

Asymptotic behaviour of non-isotropic random walks with heavy tails

open access: yesModern Stochastics: Theory and Applications, 2017
A random flight on a plane with non-isotropic displacements at the moments of direction changes is considered. In the case of exponentially distributed flight lengths a Gaussian limit theorem is proved for the position of a particle in the scheme of ...

Lévy Flights Diffusion with Drift in Heterogeneous Membranes

open access: yesMembranes, 2023
The modelling of diffusion in membranes is essential to understanding transport processes through membranes, especially when it comes to improving process efficiency. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between membrane structures,
