In the last few years the centenary of many events which occurred during the American Civil War has been celebrated. One important medical event has apparently passed unnoticed. This is the first description of that remarkable and fascinating complication of nerve wounds which we know as causalgia.

CAUSALGIA

Forty-eight cases of causalgia are described. The syndrome was caused by missile injury in 33 patients. There was a major arterial injury in 22 patients. Sympathetic block followed by sympathectomy abolished the pain in 11 of the first 14 patients in the series.
