, 1993 This paper examines inchoative-causative (noncausal-causal) verb alternations in 21 languages and 31 verbs and finds that languages can be ranked in terms of how often they use causatives, and verb meanings likewise can be ranked in terms of how often they occur in causative pairs vs. anticausative pairs.
