Voice morphology and the causative alternation
2015AbstractIn this chapter, we first see that across languages we find two morphological variants of anticausative verbs. Some verbs do not make a formal difference between their causative and their anticausative use; these verbs form unmarked anticausatives (class B).

Anaemia and thyrotoxicosis: The need to look for an alternative cause
Clinical Endocrinology, 2018SummaryObjectivesAnaemia and thyrotoxicosis are both relatively common. It is unclear whether thyrotoxicosis results in anaemia in the absence of other causes. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of anaemia in patients with thyrotoxicosis.DesignA prospective cohort study of patients with thyrotoxicosis.Patients ...

Event decomposition and the causative alternation
2015AbstractThis chapter provides evidence that while indeed anticausative predicates lack agentivity, they do involve a cause component. Importantly, causatives and anticausatives do not differ in terms of event complexity or event decomposition, but only in the absence vs.

Causative Alternations of Children With Specific Language Impairment
Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 1998Alternating verbs to indicate or to relinquish cause requires an understanding of semantic and syntactic knowledge. This study evaluated the ability of children with specific language impairment (SLI) to produce the causative alternation in comparison to age peers and to language peers.

Causativity alternation in the lower field
2021Abstract We will argue in this paper that the lower field of the sentence, little vP, is endowed with a new functional category cause phrase (causP). We will severet anticausativity from voice. We will propose that anticausative

Alternate deletion and potentiation as the cause of pulsus alternans
American Heart Journal, 1969Abstract We have tested the hypothesis that pulsus alternans could be explained by heterometric autoregulation. Dogs were aseptically prepared one week in advance with ultrasonic flow probes, pressure cannulae, dimension transducers (mutual inductance and sonar methods), and atrial stimulation electrodes.

Norms, causes, and alternative possibilities
Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2010AbstractI agree with Knobe's claim in his “Person as Scientist, Person as Moralist” article that moral considerations are integral to the workings of people's competence in making causal judgments. However, I disagree with the particular explanation he gives of the way in which moral considerations influence causal judgments.

Alternatives to Indwelling Catheters Cause Unintended Complications
The American Surgeon™, 2016To reduce the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), limiting use of indwelling catheters is encouraged with alternative collection methods and early removal. Adverse effects associated with such practices have not been described. We also determined if CAUTI preventative measures increase the risk of catheter-related complications.

Neglect of Alternative Causes in Predictive but Not Diagnostic Reasoning
Psychological Science, 2010People are renowned for their failure to consider alternative hypotheses. We compare neglect of alternative causes when people make predictive versus diagnostic probability judgments. One study with medical professionals reasoning about psychopathology and two with undergraduates reasoning about goals and actions or about causal transmission yielded ...
