THE WALL OF THE CAVE [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Modern Physics A, 1999
In this article old and new relations between gauge fields and strings are discussed. We add new arguments that the Yang–Mills theories must be described by the noncritical strings in the five-dimensional curved space. The physical meaning of the fifth dimension is that of the renormalization scale represented by the Liouville field.

Observations on the habitat and feeding behaviour of the hypogean genus Eukoenenia (Palpigradi, Eukoeneniidae) in the Western Italian Alps [PDF]

open access: yesSubterranean Biology, 2022
The order Palpigradi includes species characterized by millimetric size and a characteristic flagellum with bristles at the end of the opisthosoma. They represent one of the less well-known and obscure arachnid orders.

CaveSeg: Deep Semantic Segmentation and Scene Parsing for Autonomous Underwater Cave Exploration [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In this paper, we present CaveSeg - the first visual learning pipeline for semantic segmentation and scene parsing for AUV navigation inside underwater caves. We address the problem of scarce annotated training data by preparing a comprehensive dataset for semantic segmentation of underwater cave scenes.

Properties of the frequency operator do not imply the quantum probability postulate [PDF]

open access: yesC.M. Caves and R. Schack, Ann. Phys. 315, 123--146 (2005), 2004
We review the properties of the frequency operator for an infinite number of systems and disprove claims in the literature that the quantum probability postulate can be derived from these properties.

Switching between standard coral reef benthic monitoring protocols is complicated: proof of concept [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
Monitoring the state of coral reefs is necessary to identify drivers of change and assess effectiveness of management actions. There are several widely-used survey methods, each of which is likely to exhibit different biases that should be quantified if ...

Characterization of the Cassava Mycobiome in Symptomatic Leaf Tissues Displaying Cassava Superelongation Disease

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2023
Superelongation disease (SED) is a fungal disease that affects cassava in the Caribbean. The symptoms include the appearance of dry necrotic spots and lesions on the leaves, which may severely affect the plant yield.

Minimum detection efficiency for a loophole-free violation of the Braunstein-Caves chained Bell inequalities [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. A 79 (2009) 062109, 2009
The chained Bell inequalities of Braunstein and Caves involving N settings per observer have some interesting applications. Here we obtain the minimum detection efficiency required for a loophole-free violation of the Braunstein-Caves inequalities for any N > 2.

Caves and cave art

open access: yesNew Trends and Issues Proceedings on Humanities and Social Sciences, 2019
This paper aims to discuss the impact and importance of the karstic caves, which are effective on the emergence and development of cave art and the rocks that generate them. The origin of cave traces to 40 thousand years and the creation of many more works of art and the importance of the rocks to the present day is very important.

Helping To Integrate The Visually Challenged Into Mainstream Society Through A Low-Cost Braille Device [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics, 2013
The visually challenged are often alienated from mainstream society because of their disabilities. This problem is even more pronounced in developing countries which often do not have the resources necessary to integrate this people group into their ...
