Transient turbid water mass reduces temperature-induced coral bleaching and mortality in Barbados [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2016
Global warming is seen as one of the greatest threats to the world’s coral reefs and, with the continued rise in sea surface temperature predicted into the future, there is a great need for further understanding of how to prevent and address the damaging

Versatile Cell Penetrating Peptide for Multimodal CRISPR Gene Editing in Primary Stem Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
CRISPR machinery in diverse molecular formats (DNA, RNA, and ribonucleic protein) is complexed into nanoparticles with the cell‐friendly arginine‐alanine‐leucine‐alanine (RALA) cell‐penetrating peptide. Nanoparticles are delivered to primary mesenchymal stem cells ex vivo or locally in vivo to facilitate multimodal CRISPR gene editing. This RALA‐CRISPR

Atomic Size Misfit for Electrocatalytic Small Molecule Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores the application and mechanisms of atomic size misfit in catalysis for small molecule activation, focusing on how structural defects and electronic properties can effectively lower the energy barriers of chemical bonds in molecules like H2O, CO2, and N2.

Mechanically Tunable Bone Scaffolds: In Vivo Hardening of 3D‐Printed Calcium Phosphate/Polycaprolactone Inks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D bone scaffold with osteogenic properties and capable of hardening in vivo is developed. The scaffold is implanted in a ductile state, and a phase transformation of the ceramic induces the stiffening and strengthening of the scaffold in vivo. Abstract Calcium phosphate 3D printing has revolutionized customized bone grafting.
