Polarization dynamics in vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Experiments and their interpretation on polarization dynamics and polarization switching in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers operated in the fundamental transverse mode regime are reviewed.

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Dissipative solitons in pattern-forming nonlinear optical systems : cavity solitons and feedback solitons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Many dissipative optical systems support patterns. Dissipative solitons are generally found where a pattern coexists with a stable unpatterned state. We consider such phenomena in driven optical cavities containing a nonlinear medium (cavity solitons ...

Intra-cavity spectroscopy using amplified spontaneous emission in fiber lasers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Fiber laser sources offer interesting possibilities for gas sensors since they can operate over an extended wavelength range, encompassing the near-IR absorption lines of a number of important gases but a major problem is that overtone absorption lines ...

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Calculation of the properties of reentrant cylindrical cavity resonators. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The lowest resonant frequencies of reentrant cylindrical cavity resonators are calculated using the method of moments to obtain upper and lower bounds.

Cavity-Modulated Proton Transfer Reactions [PDF]

open access: yes
Proton transfer is ubiquitous in many fundamental chemical and biological processes, and the ability to modulate and control the proton transfer rate would have a major impact on numerous quantum technological advances.

Hydrogen‐Assisted Fracture of Iron‐Based Fe–Ni–Al Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Principal relations and fracture mechanisms of single‐phase and precipitate‐strengthened Fe–Ni–Al alloys subjected to prior electrochemical hydrogen charging are identified. The mechanisms of hydrogen effect on strength and microhardness are discussed, including hydrogen‐induced increase in microhardness and the role of hydrogen in fracture behavior ...

Construction, Theory and simulation of Cavity QED Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The microscopically pumped maser, or micromaser is a cavity QED experiment intended to be a physical realisation of the Jaynes-Cummings model of a single two-level atom interacting with a single mode electromagnetic field. This is the simplest model that
