Characterization and Amplification of Retrotransposable Elements Platy-1 and Alu in the Cebidae Lineage of Platyrrhine Primates [PDF]
Alu mobile elements are much more than “junk DNA”. Inherent properties such as high copy number, small ~300 bp size, and their nearly homoplasy-free nature make these elements particularly useful in resolving primate phylogenies.

ABSTRACT Phylogenetic trees are analytic tools used in primate studies to elucidate evolutionary relationships. Because of its relative ease to sequence and rapid evolution compared to nuclear genomes, mitochondrial DNA is frequently used for phylogeny building. This project evaluated the effectiveness of using individual or grouped mitochondrial genes

Simian foamy viruses (SFV) infect a wide range of Old World and Neotropical primates (NP). Unlike Old World primates, little is known about the diversity and prevalence of SFV in NP, mainly from a free-living population.
