Antibacterial diterpenoids fromCedrus atlantica

Four diterpene alcohols were isolated from the neutral hexane extract of the cones of Cedrus atlantica, and their structures were confirmed after comparing their spectral data with literature values. These products exhibited significant antibacterial activity against gram (+/-) bacteria.

The main odorant constituents of Cedrus atlantica essential oil were characterized by GC-Olfactometry (GC-O), using the Aroma Extract Dilution Analysis (AEDA) methodology with 12 panelists. The two most potent odor-active constituents were vestitenone and 4-acetyl-1-methylcyclohexene.

Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica Man.) is a typical tree species for the regions of North Africa. Trees reach a significant height of 35-65 m. The diameter of the of the trunk at the chest height Ranging between 0.9-1.8 m that gives it a considerable economic interest. The heard core wood could be coloured from reddish brown to dark brown.
