A New ′Conservation Space′? Protected Areas, Environmental Economic Activities and Discourses in Two Yucatán Biosphere Reserves in Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesConservation & Society, 2014
This article examines some of the local socioeconomic repercussions of two biosphere reserves on the Yucatán Peninsula-Ría Celestún and Ría Lagartos. We analyse aspects of the relationship that the residents of the six villages located within the two ...

Linking Inferred Laboratory-Derived Temperature Stress to the Immunocompetence of Wild <i>Octopus maya</i> (Mayan Octopus) G.L. Voss & Solís, 1966. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We established a correlation between thermal stress (an aerobic scope proxy) and the immune system in a wild octopus population. This suggests that oxygen capacity–related thermal tolerance may influence immunocompetence in marine species. We highlight potential connections between aerobic scope proxies and immune function.

Assessment of recovery potential for the American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus): An application of the IUCN green status process

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 33, Issue 11, Page 1175-1199, November 2023., 2023
Abstract According to an International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assessment (RLA), the American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus), an iconic coastal species, is at risk of extirpation in some regions within its range where small and vulnerable populations occur.

Importance of deepening integration of crime and conservation sciences

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 1, February 2022., 2022
Abstract Conservation crime is a globally distributed societal problem. Conservation crime science, an emerging interdisciplinary field, has the potential to help address this problem. However, its utility depends on serious reflection on the transposition of crime science approaches to conservation contexts, which may differ in meaningful ways from ...

Reproductive Strategy of a Continental Shelf Lane Snapper Population from the Southern Gulf of Mexico

open access: yesMarine and Coastal Fisheries, Volume 13, Issue 2, Page 140-156, April 2021., 2021
Abstract Reproductive strategy in snapper seems directly related to whether a population or a species occurs over a continental or insular habitat. Since studies on Lane Snapper Lutjanus synagris reproduction have been mostly focused on populations associated with islands, the purpose of this work was to assess the reproductive strategy of a ...

Intertwined effects of climate and land use change on environmental dynamics and carbon accumulation in a mangrove‐fringed coastal lagoon in Java, Indonesia

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 26, Issue 3, Page 1414-1431, March 2020., 2020
Our interdisciplinary research reveals that the interaction between climate and human activities controlled the Segara Anakan Lagoon’s (SAL) carbon‐environmental dynamic by changing its sediment supply and salinity, hence altered the organic matter composition and deposition.

Biopolítica y Reservas de la Biosfera: espacios de (in) movilidad y conflicto. Una mirada etnográfica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper uses the concept of sites of contentious (im)mobility to highlight the centrality of mobility for bio-politics. The article draws ethnographic evidence from the study of conservation and ecotourism practices in the Biosphere Reserve of Ría ...
