We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Strength through diversity: how cancers thrive when clones cooperate
Intratumor heterogeneity can offer direct benefits to the tumor through cooperation between different clones. In this review, Kuiken et al. discuss existing evidence for clonal cooperativity to identify overarching principles, and highlight how novel technological developments could address remaining open questions.

Rats fed ad libitum (group 1) had little change in fat cell number in epididymal depots from 6 to 27 months of age, but a marked increase in fat cell number in perirenal depots between 6 and 18 months. Food restriction of rats to 60% of group 1 from 6 weeks of age on (group 2) reduced fat cell number in both depots throughout life and prevented an ...

Chromosome Numbers in Cancer Cells
Nature, 1947DURING an investigation on the variation of the chromosome system in human cancer of the uterus, we were able to observe frequently (in six epitheliomas of the uterus portio) a mitotic figure with a peculiar aspect of the chromosomes. In such cell divisions (which appear mixed with normal, heteroploid and polyploid ones) 24 chromosomes are present ...

Neural stem cells and regulation of cell number
Progress in Neurobiology, 2002Normal CNS development involves the sequential differentiation of multipotent stem cells. Alteration of the numbers of stem cells, their self-renewal ability, or their proliferative capacity will have major effects on the appropriate development of the nervous system.

T Cell Development by the Numbers
Trends in Immunology, 2017T cells are continually generated in the thymus in a highly dynamic process comprising discrete steps of lineage commitment, T cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangement, and selection. These steps are linked to distinct rates of proliferation, survival, and cell death, but a quantitative picture of T cell development is only beginning to emerge.

Genetic control of NKT cell numbers
Immunology & Cell Biology, 2004NKT cells play a critical role in shaping the character and strength of a wide range of immune responses, including those against pathogens, tumours, allografts and autologous tissues. Because numbers of NKT cells affect clinical outcomes in a wide range of disease models, and this characteristic demonstrates allelic variation, the mapping of the ...
