Chiral separation of chloroalkanes with the chromatographic column onboard Martian rovers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Computer image of the Rosalind Franklin Rover of ESA's ExoMars mission. ExoMars is scheduled to land on planet Mars in Oxia Planum in 2029. This area represents an interesting spot to look for biosignatures. Investigations of ExoMars include measurement on molecular chirality. We show that chiral chloroalkanes, that have been identified on Mars, can be

Evolutionarily conserved crosstalk in developmental biology

open access: yes
Cellular communication is a fundamental process in animal development and homeostasis. Signaling pathways are the basis of this communication, as the transduction of external and internal cues leads to a cellular response such as cell migration, division

Prospecting the protein design landscape

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review outlines the current state of various protein design approaches. We discuss the current possibilities enabled by recently released tools, highlight future avenues to pursue in protein design, and underscore the crucial role of key databases and resources for successful protein design workflows.

Synergistic exacerbation of oral mucositis caused by IL-23 deficiency and oral Candida albicans exposure

open access: yesmBio
Targeted head and neck irradiation (HNI) used for cancer therapy causes mucosal damage and immune dysregulation, leaving cancer patients highly susceptible to infections of the oral mucosa.

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

RNA‐related functions of BRCA2 in transcription, replication, and genome stability

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Beyond its role in homologous recombination, BRCA2 regulates R‐loop homeostasis, DNA–RNA hybrid resolution, RNA polymerase II dynamics, and transcriptional activation. Disruption of any of these functions can contribute to genome instability, inflammatory signaling, and tumorigenesis. BRCA2 is a central tumor suppressor protein best known for its roles

TONSOKU prevents the formation of large tandem duplications and restrains ATR–WEE1 checkpoint activation

open access: yesNature Communications
Copy number variation (CNV) plays a fundamental role in modulating plant agronomic traits and tumorigenesis in animals. While frequently linked to replication stress, the mechanisms giving rise to CNVs are not fully elucidated.

Evolution of Self-Assembling Patterns in Cellular Automata using Development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper is concerned with the application of ideas inspired by developmental biology to the evolution of cellular automata rules using genetic programming. In particular, it is focused on so-called self-assembling patterns.

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.
