2018This is a short introduction to the sandpile cellular automaton. It is aimed at non-specialist, who may not be familiar with statistical physics models. Technicalities are kept to a minimum and the emphasis is on motivation, clear definitions, key properties and some of the challenges.

Geometry and arithmetic of a simple cellular automaton
Complex Syst., 1991Summary: This paper presents the results of a study of the geometric and arithmetic properties of the graph of a simple cellular automaton, considered as a mapping of the unit interval to itself. The graph provides an example of a strictly self-similar figure and exhibits some numeric properties relating to Fermat numbers.
