Cement leakage during vertebroplasty: an underestimated problem? [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Spine Journal, 2005
Overall, vertebroplasty has a low complication rate. Nevertheless, severe complications can occur. The majority of these are related to cement extrusion. The rate of cement leakage is often obtained by X-ray, with only a single leak registration per vertebra.

Calcium phosphate cement leakage after percutaneous vertebroplasty for osteoporotic vertebral fractures: risk factor analysis for cement leakage

Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, 2005
Object. The purpose of this study was to analyze the risk factors for leakage of calcium phosphate cement (CPC) after vertebroplasty for osteoporotic vertebral fractures and to determine whether the vertebral body (VB) leakage caused any changes in the therapeutic benefits. Methods.

Cement Directed Kyphoplasty Reduces Cement Leakage as Compared With Vertebroplasty

Spine, 2013
A novel randomized, controlled, unblinded clinical trial comparing 2 procedural interventions for painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. The primary study objective was to evaluate cement leakage for a cement directed kyphoplasty system (CDKS) with anteriorly biased cement flow and vertebroplasty.

The Eggshell Technique for Prevention of Cement Leakage During Kyphoplasty

Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, 2007
Cement extravasation during kyphoplasty occurs between 4% and 9%, a much lower incidence than with vertebroplasty. However, because of the potential complications of cement in and around the spinal canal, any egress of cement outside the vertebral body is extremely concerning.

Quantitative Volumetry of Cement Leakage in Viscosity-controlled Vertebroplasty

Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, 2012
This study was designed as a cohort study comparing a prospective sample to a historic control group. The aim of the actual trial was to compare the rate of cement leakage by quantitative volumetry comparing viscosity-controlled and non-viscosity-controlled vertebroplasty.Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a widespread safe and effective technique in ...

Complications in Percutaneous Vertebroplasty Associated with Puncture or Cement Leakage

CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology, 2007
Due to the minimally invasive character and excellent clinical outcome of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), the procedure is being performed in greatly increasing numbers. While PVP has a low complication rate in general, severe complications can occur.

In vivo evaluation of marginal leakage of four inlay cements

The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 1976
Marginal leakage was demonstrated in all the inlays at all time intervals with all cements by the use of the isotope Ca45. Gross marginal leakage was observed in all inlays luted with the cyanoacrylate cement at all time intervals. The setting time of this cement is very short, making it difficult to completely seat the inlay before the cement sets ...

Intradural cement leakage: a rare complication of percutaneous vertebroplasty

Acta Neurochirurgica, 2008
Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) is one of the alternative treatments for vertebral fractures. Reported significant complications include pain, radiculopathy, spinal cord compression, pulmonary embolism, infection and rib fractures. In this report, we highlight intradural cement leakage which is a rare complication of the procedure.

Retention and marginal leakage of provisional crowns cemented with provisional cements enriched with chlorhexidine diacetate

The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 2007
Provisional crowns cemented with provisional luting agents are susceptible to washout, marginal leakage, and secondary caries when placed for a prolonged period. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of incorporating chlorhexidine diacetate (antibacterial agent) into provisional cements on retention and marginal leakage of provisional ...
