Toughening cemented carbides by phase transformation of zirconia
Yttria partially stabilized zirconia was introduced into WC-Co cemented carbides to enhance their mechanical performance. The hardness and fracture toughness were improved simultaneously with the addition of ZrO2.

Characterization of grain boundary character distribution in cemented carbides via a stereological method [PDF]
This paper reports the interdisciplinary approach of simultaneous use of a stereological method, namely the five parameter analysis (FPA) method and the grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) in cemented carbides.

Mechanics and mechanisms of fatigue in a WC-Ni hardmetal and a comparative study with respect to WC-Co hardmetals [PDF]
There is a major interest in replacing cobalt binder in hardmetals (cemented carbides) aiming for materials with similar or even improved properties at a lower price.

Implementation of an effective time-saving two-stage methodology for microstructural characterization of cemented carbides [PDF]
Linear intercept on scanning electron microscopy micrographs is the most commonly used measurement method to determine carbide grain size and contiguity in WC–Co cemented carbides (hardmetals).

WC-Based Cemented Carbides with High Entropy Alloyed Binders: A Review
Cemented carbides have belonged to the most important engineering materials since their invention in the 1920s. Commonly, they consist of hard WC grains embedded in a cobalt-based ductile binder. Recently, attempts have been made to substitute the cobalt

On Measurement and Interpretation of Toughness Behaviour of Carbide Tools [PDF]
The actual significance of any definition of toughness behaviour of carbide tools depends on the existence of an interrelation between the quality as defined and the occurrence of chipping and premature failure in cutting.
