Visibility of the central canal on MRI

Neuroradiology, 2000
The central canal of the spinal cord is present at birth and becomes progressively obliterated. Cadaver studies have shown that it may persist partially or completely. To our knowledge, this entity has not been described on MRI. We reviewed 794 MRI studies of the spinal cord, and found 12 patients (aged 14 to 65 years) who had an intramedullary cavity.

A Radiological Study of the Central Canal in Myelomeningocele

Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 1967
UMMARY The anatomical features and clinical significance of findings in a case of myelomeningocele are discussed. It is shown that the ventricular system has a direct communication via the central canal to the top of the sac and that the fluid in the myelomeningocele sac has no communication with the central canal and the ventricular system ...

The spinal cord central canal: response to experimental hydrocephalus and canal occlusion

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1972
✓ The central canal of the spinal cord was studied with canal occlusion alone, and in experimental (kaolin) hydrocephalus without and with central canal occlusion. Massive dilatation of the canal occurred with kaolin hydrocephalus. Syrinxes extending into the gray and white matter of the cord and communicating with the central canal developed in both ...

Vertical Fracture of the Central Sacral Canal

The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1996
A case is reported of a sagittal fracture of the sacrum associated with diastasis of the symphysis pubis. The patient suffered no lasting neurologic injury. A literature review suggests that these vertical fractures may carry a better prognosis than other sacral fractures that involve the central canal.

✓ Lumbar thecoperitoneal shunting was carried out in patients with communicating hydrocephalus due to long-standing tuberculous meningitis. At the time of this surgical procedure, the filum terminale was excised to achieve filum terminostomy. The central canal of the excised filum terminale in seven hydrocephalic children and an equal number from ...
