Exposure to heat waves and drought improves subsequent leaf heat tolerance for five oak species in southern California

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Given the threats of climate change, we investigated the impact of high temperatures separately and in combination with reduced soil water on leaf heat tolerance for five oaks (Fagaceae) with overlapping ranges in southern California, USA: Quercus agrifolia and Q. chrysolepis (evergreen species), Q. douglasii and Q.

Hydrogen‐Bonding Order Associated With Radical Delocalization in Layered Organic Cathode Materials

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
“TAQ” and TAPT share the same pyrazine‐based molecular structure but differ in degree of crystallinity. Combined x‐ray scattering, solid‐state NMR, MicroED, and EPR reveal that “TAQ”'s higher crystallinity and ordered hydrogen‐bonding network are associated with enhanced radical delocalization and conductivity, highlighting structural order as a design

PCIC science brief: Tropical Pacific impacts on cooling North American winters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This PCIC Science Brief covers a recent paper by Sigmond and Fyfe (2016) that was published in Nature Climate Change. The authors investigate the causes of cooler winters over the early 2000s in North America and find that they vary by region.

Step‐Associated Cu‐Ceria Interfaces Enhance Catalytic Activity and Selectivity

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The catalytic activity and selectivity of supported Cu nanoparticles depends on their interfacial environments, with Cu nanoparticles at step‐associated environments converting CO2 to methanol much faster than those on terrace facets, indicating that step sites create more active metal–oxide interfaces.
