Bryoherms from the lower Sarmatian (upper Serravallian, Middle Miocene) of the Central Paratethys. [PDF]

open access: yesFacies, 2023
AbstractBryozoan–serpulid–algal–thrombolite bioherms of up to 50 cm size are described from the Sarmatian (upper Middle Miocene) of the Central Paratethys. They occur on top of lower Sarmatian carbonate sediments of high-energy conditions and the individual bioherms settle on crests of ripples.

A 13.06 Ma widespread ignimbrite in the Pannonian Basin captured a snapshot of shallow marine to coastal environment in Central Paratethys [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Voluminous Miocene silicic volcanism sourced mainly from the extensional Pannonian Basin played a major role in the evolution of the Central Paratethys.

The Central Paratethys Sea-rise and demise of a Miocene European marine biodiversity hotspot. [PDF]

open access: yesSci Rep
AbstractThe Miocene Climate Optimum (MCO, ~ 17–14 Ma) was a time of extraordinary marine biodiversity in the Circum-Mediterranean Region. This boom is best recorded in the deposits of the vanished Central Paratethys Sea, which covered large parts of central to southeastern Europe.

Oligocene archaeomonad stomatocysts from the Polish Central Paratethys

open access: yesActa Palaeontologica Polonica
An unanticipated diversity of archaeomonad stomatocysts intermixed with marine plankton including diatoms, silicoflagellates, parmaleans and individual siliceous protistan scales was encountered in Rupelian diatomites from the Central Paratethys. In this

The middle miocene (Badenian) holoplanktonic mollusks (Euthecosomata - Pteropoda) from Serbia, central paratethys [PDF]

open access: yesGeološki Anali Balkanskoga Poluostrva
The present paper deals with holoplanktonic gastropods (Pteropoda) from the Middle Miocene (Badenian) deposits of Serbia. The material for the present study comes from three localities at the southern margin of the Pannonian Basin (Central Paratethys ...

The South-Western Boundary of Central Paratethys

open access: yesGeologia Croatica, 2002
Small Neogene basins within the Dinarides were never invaded bymarine transgressions during their evolution. The fresh-water sedimentation, endemic fauna and their position between the Adriaticregion and the Pannonian Basin System explain why these ...

Diversity and distribution patterns of the Oligocene and Miocene decapod crustaceans (Crustacea: Malacostraca) of the Western and Central Paratethys [PDF]

open access: yesGeologica Carpathica, 2016
Decapod associations have been significant components of marine habitats throughout the Cenozoic when the major diversification of the group occurred.

Euryhaline preferences of the decapod crab Mioplax socialis enabled it to survive during the Badenian/Sarmatian extinction (Miocene) in the Central Paratethys [PDF]

open access: yesGeologica Carpathica, 2016
Although decapod crustaceans of the Central Paratethys were diverse during the Badenian (Langhian-Early Serravallian), a dramatic drop in their diversity occurred at the boundary with the Sarmatian.

Late Miocene megalake regressions in Eurasia [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The largest megalake in the geological record formed in Eurasia during the late Miocene, when the epicontinental Paratethys Sea became tectonically-trapped and disconnected from the global ocean.

Towards better correlation of the Central Paratethys regional time scale with the standard geological time scale of the Miocene Epoch

open access: yesGeologica Carpathica, 2018
Depositional sequences originating in semi-enclosed basins with endemic biota, partly or completely isolated from the open ocean, frequently do not allow biostratigraphic correlations with the standard geological time scale (GTS).
