S-CO2 Brayton Cycle Coupled with Molten Salts Thermal Storage Energy, Exergy and Sizing Comparative Analysis

open access: yesApplied Sciences
In the context of central solar receiver systems, the utilisation of S-CO2 Brayton cycles as opposed to Rankine cycles confers a number of advantages, including enhanced efficiency, the requirement for less sophisticated turbomachinery, and a reduction ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Appraisal of digital terrain elevation data for low-altitude flight [PDF]

open access: yes
The use of terrain elevation databases in advanced guidance and navigation systems has greatly expanded. However, the limitations and accuracies of these databases must be considered and established prior to safe system flight evaluation.

Using the Internet for professional development [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
This paper reports on a short course that used the Internet in the context of a professional peer group learning environment. The course made use of the WebCT conferencing system. This system allows messages to be kept in a central location.

Energy-Throughput Tradeoff in Sustainable Cloud-RAN with Energy Harvesting

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper, we investigate joint beamforming for energy-throughput tradeoff in a sustainable cloud radio access network system, where multiple base stations (BSs) powered by independent renewable energy sources will collaboratively transmit wireless ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Geometrical comparison of inline and staggered stack wire mesh absorbers for solar volumetric receivers

open access: yesCase Studies in Thermal Engineering
Open volumetric receivers using air as the heat transfer fluid can operate at higher temperatures and thermal efficiencies than the current state of the art in central receiver systems.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Light bulb heat exchanger for magnetohydrodynamic generator applications - Preliminary evaluation [PDF]

open access: yes
The light-bulb heat-exchanger concept is investigated as a possible means of using a combustion heat source to supply energy to an inert gas MHD power generator system.

Numerical investigations of advanced volumetric reseiver materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper presents the results of a numerical analysis of the mass transport and the heat flow through a volumetric solar receiver as a candidate component for a central receiver system for solar electricity generation.
