Assessment of the potential of solar thermal small power systems in small utilities [PDF]

open access: yes
The potential economic benefit of small solar thermal electric power systems to small municipal and rural electric utilities is assessed. Five different solar thermal small power system configurations were considered in three different solar thermal ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Solar thermal plant impact analysis and requirements definition [PDF]

open access: yes
Progress on a continuing study comprising of ten tasks directed at defining impact and requirements for solar thermal power systems (SPS), 1 to 10 MWe each in capacity, installed during 1985 through year 2000 in a utility or a nonutility load in the ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Mathematical Model for Economic Optimization of Tower-Type Solar Thermal Power Generation Systems via Coupled Monte Carlo Ray-Tracing and Multi-Mechanism Heat Loss Equations

open access: yesMathematics
With the global energy transition and decarbonization goals, tower-type solar thermal power generation is increasingly important for dispatchable clean energy due to its high efficiency, thermal storage capacity, and regulation performance.

Bring Your Own Reputation: A Feasible Trust System for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

open access: yesJournal of Sensor and Actuator Networks, 2018
The establishment of trust in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) will require the application of non-conventional measures of information security, such as reputation of the participants.

Influence of Doppler Bin Width on GPS Acquisition Probabilities

open access: yes, 2013
Acquisition is a search in two continuous dimensions, where the digital algorithms require a partitioning of the search space into cells. Depending on the partitioning of the Doppler frequency domain, more than one cell might contain significant signal ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
