Centrifuge model testing at Caltech

International Journal of Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 1983
Abstract In the past eight years a variety of model tests has been performed on the geotechnical centrifuge at Caltech. They include soil mechanics experiments, such as static and dynamic pile and foundation tests, and other investigations of a more geographical nature where ground faulting and earthquake motions have been modeled.

Centrifugal model tests of the Lodalen landslide

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1978
The slide which occurred at Lodalen, Oslo in 1954 was used to compare the behaviour of soil models tested in a centrifuge with a well-documented prototype event. The paper describes the centrifugal testing of three models prepared from block samples in which an attempt was made to simulate the stress history of the site.

Numerical modelling of centrifuge tests on tunnel–soil systems

Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 2014
The number of tunnels in seismic regions has grown significantly in recent decades. It has usually been assumed that tunnels perform better than surface structures during seismic events. However, recent cases have shown that tunnels can be significantly damaged by seismic events.

Centrifuge modelling of plate bearing tests

2012
Current guidance given on plate bearing testing of granular soils suggests that the plate be at least five times the nominal size of the coarsest material. However this limiting ratio can have a huge influence on the reaction load required from plant and resources when conducted to confirm strength parameters used in the design of the sub grade and ...

PHOTOGRAMMETRY IN CENTRIFUGAL TESTING OF SOIL MODELS

The Photogrammetric Record, 1973
AbstractSince 1969 photogrammetric techniques have been employed as a means of obtaining precise measurements of surface movement of soil models spinning in a centrifuge at a speed of up to 45 m s‐1. Over 100 soil model tests have been performed on about 12 different types of soil stability problem during this period.

Centrifuge Model Tests on Bearing Capacity of Clay

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1984
A series of centrifugal model tests to investigate the bearing capacity of a strip footing on normally consolidated Kawasaki clay was performed. The proposed prototype is a normally consolidated clay foundation having undrained shear strength increasing with depth.

Simulation of Climatic Conditions in Centrifuge Model Tests

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1991
Abstract A review is presented of the need for simulation of effects associated with tide, rainfall, temperature variations, etc., in geotechnical centrifuge models. Interest in the overall theme was generated by a perceived need to model rainfall in long-term testing of models of an embankment which was otherwise found to dry out.

Miniature Centrifuge Modeling for Conventional Consolidation Test

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2018
Abstract Consolidation parameters are usually determined in the laboratory with oedometer tests in earth gravity conditions (1 g). However, performing the test is very time-consuming. Although dynamic approaches in which higher accelerations are applied have been developed as an alternative to the static approaches to reduce the duration

Centrifuge model tests on backfill stability

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1986
The 6 m diameter, 30 g-tonne geotechnical centrifuge at Queen's University is described. Results from eight model tests, carried out on plain cemented sand samples representing mine backfills, are presented. These data show that the stable prototype backfill heights obtained from centrifuge tests exceed the failure heights predicted from unconfined ...
