Pioneers of centrifuge modelling

International Journal of Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, 2015
Although the concept of using a centrifuge to model engineering structures arose in the nineteenth century, the practice began only in the 1930s, in America and Russia. This paper provides details of the careers of four pioneers, primarily in the period prior to 1945 – Bucky, Davidenkov, Fedorov and Pokrovsky.

One‐dimensional centrifugation model

AIChE Journal, 2003
AbstractA 1‐D theoretical model based on Darcy's law and conservation of mass was used to describe transient filtration on a basket centrifuge for both compressible and incompressible cakes. This filtration model was validated assuming that a liquid layer lay above the surface of the cake.

Centrifugal force model for pedestrian dynamics

Physical Review E, 2005
In this paper, a centrifugal force model is developed for pedestrian dynamics. The effects of both the headway and the relative velocity among pedestrians are taken into account, which can be expressed by a "centrifugal force" term in dynamic equation. The jamming probability due to the arching at exits for crowd flows is provided.

Centrifuge modelling

2010
This chapter helps the reader in understanding some of the practical considerations and reviews some of the apparatus and techniques available to the centrifuge modeller. There are many different types of centrifuges, used for example in material processing, aeronautics and motion simulation.

Centrifugal Modelling of Riverbank Failure

Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1976
Pilot tests were first performed on kaolin models, and then further tests were carried out on models made from undisturbed block samples taken from the site. The investigation described was limited to a study of the individual and combined effects on the riverbank stability of dredging of the riverbed, flooding and drawdown, and heightening of the ...

Centrifugal Pump Modeling

2019
Centrifugal pumps are one of the most important components in power plants. They are also widely used in industry. This chapter presents the different types of pump components (dynamic and static centrifugal pumps) and gives a detailed description of the physical equations for each of them: modeling assumptions and fundamental equations. A test-case is

Centrifuge modelling of raked piles

Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 2008
Inclined piles are prohibited by many codes in seismic areas. Nevertheless the battered effect has not yet been clarified because very few data are available. The present work is a comparison, at reduced scale in the centrifuge, of the response of two simplified pile groups: a 1 × 2 vertical piles and 1 × 2 pile group with one inclined pile.
