Using DNA metabarcoding to reveal prey diversity in diets of juvenile black sea bass (Centropristis striata) in Long Island Sound in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesFishery Bulletin
— The abundance of black sea bass ( Centropristis striata ) has increased in coastal waters of the north-eastern United States, and the implications of that change for regional food webs remain poorly understood.

Nonconsumptive effects of a range‐expanding predator on juvenile lobster (Homarus americanus) population dynamics

open access: yesEcosphere, 2019
Distribution shifts poleward are a widespread response to climate change and can result in altered community composition and interactions among species that previously were geographically isolated.

Free Falling: Fizzing Wild‐Caught Smallmouth Bass Results in the Inability to Control Buoyancy in Deep Water

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 4, Page 41-49, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Fizzing, a somewhat controversial technique for mitigating barotrauma, uses hollow hypodermic needles to release gas from the swim bladder of fish. To isolate effects of fizzing, 106 smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) were caught from shallow water without barotrauma and tested to determine if they could effectively control their buoyancy ...

The South Carolina fishery for black sea bass (Centropristis striata), 1977 - 1981 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
Trends in recreational catch, commercial landings, and size composition of black sea bass (Centropristis striata) in the South Carolina fishery during 1977-1981 are examined and biological aspects relevant to management are reviewed .

Territorial and occupancy behavior of black sea bass on oyster aquaculture gear and boulder habitat

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Observations of fish behavior can provide insights into habitat preferences and use. Black sea bass, Centropristis striata, are a territorial temperate reef finfish species known for their high commercial and recreational value and association with ...

An Evaluation of Black Sea Bass (Centropristis striata) Distribution and Habitat Availability in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean under Climate Change

open access: yes, 2021
Fishery scientists are increasingly concerned about the impacts of climate change on marine fisheries and ecosystem health. Many marine species along the Northeast United States continental shelf have shifted spatial distribution and abundance in ...

Impact of CO2‐Induced Aquatic Acidification on Environmental DNA and RNA Shedding and Persistence

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
We conducted mesocosm experiments to determine the shedding and decay rate constants of eDNA and eRNA in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) at various partial CO2 pressures in seawater. To our knowledge, this is the first study manipulating seawater pH using CO2.

The effects of temperature on sex differentiation and growth of black sea bass (Centropristis striataL.)

open access: yesAquaculture Research, 2009
To examine the effects of temperature on sex differentiation in the black sea bass (Centropristis striata L.), a protogynous hermaphrodite, juveniles (∼0.5 g) were cultured in recirculating systems at 17, 21 or 25 °C. Growth was assessed at 155, 182, 241 and 275 days post hatch and sex differentiation was determined histologically.

Genetic Stock Identification and Migration in Black Sea Bass (Centropristis striata) along the Western Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico

open access: yes, 2014
The black sea bass, Centropristis striata, is a member of the family Serranidae that is commercially important throughout its range, which extends throughout the western Atlantic (from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Cape Canaveral, Florida) and Gulf of ...
