Automatic landmarking of cephalograms
Computers and Biomedical Research, 1989This paper presents an algorithm for automatically locating certain characteristic anatomical points called landmarks on cephalograms (skull X-rays). These landmarks are used by orthodontists in diagnosis and treatment planning. The algorithm uses digital image processing and feature recognition techniques to locate the landmarks.

Comparison of measurements from photographed lateral cephalograms and scanned cephalograms
American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2007In this study, we investigated whether a digital photograph of a lateral cephalometric radiograph can produce measurements as accurate as those from a digital image created with a flatbed scanner.Twenty pretreatment lateral cephalograms were randomly selected from the patient files at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. Each radiograph was photographed with a

Knowledge-Based Landmarking of Cephalograms
Computers and Biomedical Research, 1985Orthodontists have defined a certain number of characteristic points, or landmarks, on X-ray images of the human skull which are used to study growth or as a diagnostic aid. This work presents the first step toward an automatic extraction of these points. They are defined with respect to particular lines which are retrieved first. The original image is

Landmark errors on posteroanterior cephalograms
American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2016It is important to reduce the method errors when evaluating posteroanterior cephalograms to see either small deviations from normal or transverse changes caused by orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to determine horizontal and vertical intraexaminer and interexaminer agreement in localization of landmarks in posteroanterior cephalograms ...

In this study, we investigated the landmark identification errors on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-derived cephalograms and conventional digital cephalograms.Twenty patients who had both a CBCT-derived cephalogram and a conventional digital cephalogram were recruited.

Computer-aided automated landmarking of cephalograms
Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics / Fortschritte der Kieferorthopdie, 1998The computer-aided method presented is able to interpret and measure radiological structures automatically and reproducibly on a large number of randomly selected lateral head films of different film quality. For example the hard and soft tissue expression of the profile is used to discuss method, application and disadvantages.

Heritability of nasal characteristics assessed using lateral cephalograms
American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2022The midface and nasal bones have a significant influence on facial esthetics. Being able to predict the ultimate size of a growing patient's nose may influence the orthodontic treatment plan. Our study aimed to determine whether significant heritability exists between parents and children using multiple soft and hard tissue measurements of nasal ...

Landmarking of cephalograms using a microcomputer system
Computers and Biomedical Research, 1990Landmarks, or certain characteristic reference points, on cephalograms are used as a diagnostic aid employed in treatment planning by orthodontists. This work presents an algorithm for recognizing some anatomical features and locating landmarks on lateral skull X rays (cephalograms) using digital image processing and feature recognition techniques.

Improving cephalogram analysis through feature subimage extraction
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, 1999An MLP with a GA was proposed to extract feature subimages containing orthodontic landmarks. Simulated images and cephalograms were used to investigate its performance in comparison with the cross-correlation method. From the results of simulated image containing shapes with different geometrical conditions, it was shown that the fault tolerance of the

Characteristics of digital cephalograms and film/screen cephalograms: a comparative study
American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2002observers for the indirect and 1 observer for the direct DIs identified 17 and 22 landmarks, respectively, on the computer monitor. X and y coordinates were recorded, and cephalometric measurements were calculated. Statistical analysis included paired-sample t tests and ANOVA models.
