A distance to the galaxy NGC4258 from observations of Cepheid variable stars

Nature, 1999
Cepheid variable stars pulsate in a way that is correlated with their intrinsic luminosity, making them useful as 'standard candles' for determining distances to galaxies; the potential systematic uncertainties in the resulting distances have been estimated to be only 8-10%.

Spectra of Population II Cepheid Variable Stars

1958
The physical properties of the population II cepheids have been studied using the following material: photoelectric observations of Arp, low dispersion spectra of Joy, high dispersion spectra taken by Sanford and Abt, and numerous moderate dispersion spectra obtained by the author. Radial velocity curves for ten cepheids are shown.

Observing simulated Cepheid variable stars in an introductory astronomy lab

American Journal of Physics, 1979
An astronomy laboratory exercise has been developed which allows students to discover for themselves the relationship between the temperature and luminosity changes in Cepheid variable stars. The equipment used is either easily constructed or readily available from among instruments commonly found in physics departments.

Edward Pigott, John Goodricke, and Henrietta Swan Leavitt: Cepheid Variable Stars

2021
The story on how Cepheid variable stars became standard candles starts with the Edward Pigott and John Goodricke. In the late eighteenth century, Pigott and Goodricke worked as both collaborators and competitors. The story of John Goodricke and his discovery of eclipsing binary variable stars can be found in Chap. 12.

Domain Adaptation under Data Misalignment: An Application to Cepheid Variable Star Classification

2014 22nd International Conference on Pattern Recognition, 2014
We address a particular scenario within the area of domain adaptation, where a predictive model obtained from a source domain can be applied directly to a target domain. Both source and target domains share the same input or feature space, but we do not impose any restrictions on the marginal and class posterior distributions (both distributions can ...

Finding Cepheid Variable Stars in Northern Dwarf Galaxies of the Local Group

2007
