Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Nano Coating on Ceramic Insulators on Leakage Current Characteristics

open access: yesIndonesian Journal of Innovation and Applied Sciences
Ceramic insulator components have high popularity because the majority of electrical distribution systems in Indonesia use ceramic insulators. Ceramic insulators have advantages in mechanical strength, but the nature of the surface material makes it easy

Thermal barrier coating by electron beam-physical vapor deposition of zirconia co-doped with yttria and niobia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Aerospace Technology and Management, 2010
The most usual ceramic material for coating turbine blades is yttria doped zirconia. Addition of niobia, as a co-dopant in the Y2O3-ZrO2 system, can reduce the thermal conductivity and improve mechanical properties of the coating.

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...

Fabrication of dense Si3N4 ceramics via coating amorphous Si3N4 nano-powders by sodium reduction in liquid ammonia

open access: yes, 2017
Commercial Si3N4 powders coated with 0-30% amorphous Si3N4 nano-powders were fabricated successfully. Amorphous Si3N4 nano-powders coating were prepared through the reduction of silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) by sodium in liquid ammonia at -45 degrees C ...

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.
