Abstract Anastomosis groups belonging to the genus Rhizoctonia are phytopathogenic fungi that affect many agricultural crops and are well distributed globally. Among these, Rhizoctonia solani is the dominant, aggressive, widely distributed and the most extensively studied species within the Rhizoctonia genus because of its dominance as a plant pathogen.

Summary The minute ‘dust seeds’ of some terrestrial orchids preferentially germinate and develop as mycoheterotrophic protocorms near conspecific adult plants. Here we test the hypothesis that mycorrhizal mycelial connections provide a direct pathway for transfer of recent photosynthate from conspecific green orchids to achlorophyllous protocorms ...

Summary Arbuscular (AM) and orchid (OrM) mycorrhiza are the most widespread mycorrhizal symbioses among flowering plants, formed by distinct fungal and plant species. They are both endosymbioses because the fungal hyphae can enter inside the plant cell to develop intracellular fungal structures that are surrounded by the plant membrane.
